I have too many does pregnant! Aaaah! So I am buying a baby monitor to hopefully save what shred is left of my sanity.

Any opinions/experience on what to get? Some of the features listed on different brands unfortunately don't mention how well it stands up to dust from hay and how far from the house your barn can be! :p

My barn is about 80-100 feet from the house, depending on which part of each building the monitor will be in. Is there one that won't pick up guinea fowl screeching?

I started out with baby monitors and they drove me crazy. Our house is 100' from the metal barn and we had to put the monitor by a window in hubby's computer room to get decent reception. Every little noise, I tore out for the barn only to find it was something else besides the doe in labor, so I went with barn cams with audio and video. Sit in the living room and just watch, listen and wait for the happy event before grabbing my kidding kit and heading to the barn to supervise delivery.

Yep, I get it, but cams are not in the budget this year, sadly.

Lilhill - what brand camera did you get? We have a metal barn too and wanted to make sure we get good reception. Our barn is at least 100' from the house.

Free - I bet just something from Walmart would work good. I used to have baby monitors and they were just from Walmart.

Hers a couple options Free. Im not sure how much you wanna spend...but we have use the audio from Walmart. We got that one cuz it has a good range. But there are so many out there. The issue I found in NH is the cold. So we insulate it as best we can and hope it last the season. But the video camera also connects right to your computer...which is nice...but again..the temps round here bother the eletronic equipment?? So I dont like to spend alot either..cuz you never know!! Good luck..hope you have a successful birthing season!! Best time of year!! Always fun!!!

I tried the cheaper cameras and the best I did with them was one season before they conked out. I finally decided to get the ones I have now and the oldest is 4 years old and still works great. Saved money by getting them rather than having to replace cameras every year or two.

Good point. Maybe I'll go with audio only this season.

They make so many differant kinds...audio/video that are cheap too...so my best advice is to go into Walmart and just look at whats out there for your budget. And happy monitoring!! :caf
