Does anyone have any good tips for a beginner? I have no animals yet, but have access to horse manure, and I'd like to start composting our kitchen waste, etc. for garden soil eventually. I'm currently reading books on composting, but any suggestions from you guys would be appreciated. Thanks!

Do not put any grease, oil or meat in the pile.... other than that anything that will rot will do great..... any animal poo will get the process started. I compost on the ground and use a spading fork to gently turn it into the soil about once a month. I have been doing it this way for 20 years and it works.

I have a huge pile by the house lol... We started it with the mostly composted manure that had been sitting in the bottom of our barn for the last like 100 years LOL, horse and cow, and probably some turkey in there too and we've been turning it by hand with pitch forks every now and then. Actually... I can't wait for spring because I can take that bottom layer off for the garden, and turn it over... WEEEE

Not that any of that helped you, but seriously.. :weee
