I'm looking into raising rabbits for meat. I live in North Alabama, where it is very hot and humid during the summer and pretty chilly during the winter. An ideal rabbit breed would thrive in that climate, breed quickly and be good mothers, put on lots of high quality meat quickly, be disease resistant, and free range reliably. What are y'all's suggestions?

I think the altex rabbit would be a good choice for you as one of its traits is to be heat tolerant.
Here is just one of the many sites regarding the altex (two Alabama and Texas ag universities worked together to develop the breed.)

Another choice could be the tamuk rabbit. Similar to the altex. Here is one of many sites:

If you query the internet (google, bing, or what ever you use) you should be able to find breeders around you.

Good luck, have fun and enjoy your rabbits. They are a fantastic addition to any homestead.
