I'm going with your vet on this one and saying lymph nodes, but that is strange for sure! It wouldn't hurt to dose them with some iodine (can get seaweed or a supplement from the pharmacy) to be sure it's not goiter from an enlarged thyroid/hypothyroidism/iodine deficiency.

We used to buy Thorvin kelp from a local organic grower's supply. Many organic growers use it as a fertilizer for their crops, but it's a great supplement to feed to livestock for extra minerals including iodine.
