I have two nubian does that are about 8 months old and are well over 80 pounds. They are both in heat, but are not very "responsive" to the buck and they will not stay still. Is this because they are young and don't know what he is trying to do? This seems like a silly question, but I figure someone will know the answer.

I can't help you on this one, but I have two Nubian does that are also 8 months and well over 80 pounds. They are visiting a few fellows right now. They've been there for about 3 weeks. I sure miss them! I guess it sometimes takes a while. Good luck!~

Wanted to bump this up a bit, as my buck will be arriving this weekend, and my doeling is over 80 lbs so she is on his list in another couple of months.... C'mon, breeders! Chad, where are you?

:hide Oh, my poor little baby girl!!!

they are probably not ready yet, ours do that, and then next thing you know they are bred! especially since you can't watch them every minute, could be that they had been bred and you missed it, they don't stand for the buck all the time, ours stand there and flag their tail, really fast! and then the buck trys to breed, and she won't stand still. We have never had one not get bred, but some we didn't see it happen.
if you can leave them together for 2 heat cycles, you can be sure of the breeding. we let the buck run with the does from october through december.

I guess I just needed to wait a day or two. By the next morning, they decided maybe they liked the buck. They must have been at the very beginning of their heat cycle when I put them together. They are both bred now. Looking forward to April babies.

It's like watching a pot of water on the stove... It simply won't boil unless you avert your eyes and find something else do to.

Unless there's some underlying condition which affects their fertility, they will breed. You may not see it happen, but it'll happen.

Think of it this way...if you put a buck in with a cycling doe that you didn't want bred, what do you reckon the chances would be of her not getting bred?

I'd say about 0.00%.
