How's Mr. B doing?

Buford is a darn good guardian. He frequently makes the rounds, sniffs the sheep like he’s asking if everything is okay. He is still submissive to Sentry, grinning when Sentry corrects him. He is deeply attached to both Sentry and Sheba, the pack ties are strong. It is educational for me and intensely insightful to watch the pack dynamics.

He has good manners at feeding time. He sits when I put his pan down, waiting on me to say “take it”. On a leash, he walks faster than I do, so he kinda drags me along. Clearly I need to step it up and move faster!

Buford just turned 2 years old and has grown into a big, handsome boy. He has given me some exasperating moments but has learned from me and most of all, Sentry and Sheba. Buford is amazing.

I'm so happy to hear he is a good dummy!

With the loss of Sentry a couple of weeks ago, Sheba and Buford are having to work a little harder. It’s lambing time, 2 ewes have lambed so far, more coming up in December. Sheba is perfect with lambing ewes. Buford has been a little confused about these scrawny things suddenly showing up. I hope I can catch some ewes lambing so I can bring Buford to watch under my supervision,

I have to brag on Buford. I have a bottle baby now. I’m leaving him with his mom and sister so he can cuddle up at night when it is cold. Plus yesterday I saw him stealing milk, so that’s a plus. Yesterday morning I fed him first, then started making rounds, including letting the young ewes out on the field and walking around with them. I fed other sheep, hay, water and forgot all about the bottle I stuck in my back pocket until I realized it wasn’t there. Great.

I went in Cooper’s pen. Buford and Sheba were laying out under the shade of a tree. Buford came galloping up and I thought he wanted in the pen with me. Nope. Ok so I brushed Cooper and spent a little with him. Buford laid down outside the pen, waiting on me. He walked off, turned back and looked at me. I went through the gate, he walked off a little further, looking back to see if I was following. I always tell the dogs, “Whatcha got? Show me!” And he led me to the tree. There on the ground was the bottle! I don’t know which dog found it and carried it to a safe place, but it was not chewed up, not even a tooth mark on it. Clearly Buford was showing me the bottle!

I picked it up, Buford grinned and wriggled in pleasure. I heaped praises on him, petted him and Sheba. I was so impressed that not only did the dogs find the bottle, knowing it was mine because it had my scent on it, but carried it to safety. Buford asking me to follow him so he could show it to me was just over the top. He is so smart.

He's beautiful! Kinda makes me wish Sheba hadn't been spayed! If those two could have pups I would be first in line. I've been quietly looking for a new LGD. Don't really want to start with a puppy but probably will. Thought about breeding Belle and having an entire litter to choose from. Knowing that I'm starting with good girls that have a great work ethic would help my peace of mind - but oh my - dealing with a whole litter would seriously add to my work burden....argh!

I’m going to make an appointment for OFA testing on Buford. I will never breed a dog without testing. After what Sentry had to go through and all the heartbreak, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. I don’t have a female on the horizon but you never know. Plus I want to know for my own satisfaction.

At the time with Sheba, breeding was the last thing on my mind. I knew I was not set up for it and with Sentry around, I sure wasn’t taking any chances. She has made a wonderful guardian, so gentle with ewes and new babies. She excels at granddaughter babysitting! Tummy rubs galore!

With Buford turning out to be such a well built dog, coming along great as a guardian, the thought is there. Before I think any further, I have to know if he is genetically sound. If Buford passes, well and good. I’ll think about it some more. If he fails, I’ll more than likely have him neutered. I will NEVER be guilty of producing a genetic train wreck like Sentry was. Dear God I miss that heart dog. 💔

Maybe Belle and Buford could have a future date…..,. Something to consider,….
