I have constructed a small fenced area for chickens to roam about in. I have also constructed a small garden fence. This next project will be much, much bigger. I am putting up a fence around a 2 acre portion of my property. DH wants to get a few goats so it needs to be sturdy enough to hold up to them. The gaps also need to be small enough my wander lust chickens can't slip through. There is also a wild rabbit population here as well, and I don't want to trap them in either.

I have used the metal U-posts in the past. Are those okay for this project or should I invest in the wood fence posts? Also, what material would work best for this fence?

Tractor supply carries 330' rolls of goat fence. It is 4 foot tall and the squares are 4 inch by 4 inch.
Look up h brace construction. You will need wood h braces at all corners. Between the h braces I would use metal t posts every 10 to 12 feet. I would get the taller t posts and leave them a foot or two taller than the 4 foot goat fence. This way you can add a single or double strand of wire at the top to discourage the jumpers.
This is a basic method to fence in goats there are other options iincluding electric.
The option I outlined will probably cost around 2 grand for 2 acres. Fencing done right is expensive, and goats are master level escape artists.

We are fencing our place (8 acres) with 2"x4"x4' non climb horse wire. Using 7' T-post with 2 strands of wire at top to make a 5' tall fence. The horse wire can be bought at Tractor Supply. It is expensive, but we plan on only doing this once. We have chickens too and didn't want them to get through the fence holes.

BTW, love your name. I sure remember those days. Enjoy them all you can, they'll be grown and gone before you know it.
