Miss P are you out there?

woe is me! i made buttermilk about 2 weeks ago using some buttermilk (made from a starter) + fresh goats milk. its been tightly sealed in the back of the fridge - but when i pulled it out... there was mold on the top of the jar's lid and a bit on the inside top of the jar! it was the dreaded pink mold

what did i do wrong??!?!

woe is me. i get an "F-" for making buttermilk
:-(

I would at best guess say something was not sterile or the culture was tainted. Homemade products don't have additives to keep them for a long shelf life so what you make should be used in about a week.

I would venture to guess the jar or lid wasn't quite as sterile as it could have been.

thanks!!

i had two jars - one with mold and one without. the 'without' was still in good shape and thanks to Miss P's suggesting i'm using it up. right now i'm taking one for the team and eating some peach cobbler with buttermilk-biscuits

;-)

whats the best way to keep everything sterile?

i take my jars our of the dishwasher and put the lids right on them... is there a better way? should i dip in bleach first????

thanks thanks thanks!
