I recently found a really good deal on a pregnant doe (possibly a yearling as this is her first freshening) and an unrelated buck to her offspring. The buck I was told IS a yearling.

The problem is that the breeder informed me she does NOT vaccinate her goats. Should I proceed with purchasing these goats? If I do get them, would it be too late or safe to vaccinate them myself? The doe is due late April to early May.

I hope I posted this in the right catagory!

Thanks

I'm assuming you're talking about CD/T vaccine?
You can give them their 1st shot the day you bring them home, then boost them 3-4 wks later....I boost our preggo does 4-5 wks before they kid.

OK thanks! I am new to goats, what about BoSe.. when do they need that shot? Also how late is too late to vaccinate a pregnant doe? I ask this because I might not be able to get them until late March due to the snow on the ground and getting a shelter put up for them.

you can go ahead and give them a bose shot, but if you can't before they kid make sure you give the kids 1/4 cc of bo-se after she gives birth. That will give them an extra boost. and worm the does a day after kidding.

Thanks! Also where would I find BoSe is it the same thing as selinium?.. Is that something I need to get at the vet? They dont have it at TSC.. Also what is ketosis and should it be something I should be concerned with after kidding?

Bo-Se is Rx and needs to be obtained from a vet. It's a selenium / vitamin E combination.

You can also just buy selenium tablets (200 mg) and crush them up and give her five of them mixed with some molasses along with 4 or 5 vitamin E caplets melted in hot water.

Actually, Selenium tablets come in mcg (not mg...big dosing difference). So you'll buy them in 200 mcg and give 5 of them.

I'd leave them alone. I don't have goats but I specifically sought out a hair sheep flock that had not been wormed or given any other shots or meds. Meaning that multiple generations had gone without them and the result is a healthier, more resistant animal. It's easier, it's cheaper and I don't have to worry about drug residuals in the meat.
