I just bought a boer buck and I don't want to rope him everytime I have to take care of his hooves, give shots etc. Is there a quick and easy way to get him tamed down? He isnt mean, just wary.
I don't think anything is "quick and easy" when it comes to goat behavior/handling. You will need to get him to trust you and that will take a while. If everytime you handle him you are sticking a needle into him or holding his feet off the ground and trimming them, or whatever, he will be leary of you when you start toward him. Try enticing him with treats and spending time in the pen with him. Don't just go around him when maintenance has to be done. Patience is going to be the key here. Start slow and easy with him. Generally goats want it to be THEIR idea to approach you. Good luck.
Animal crackers, goats love them. Give him one each day in his feed, then offer him one from your hand. Both of our blubbering idiots are crazy about animal crackers.
