As many of you kow, I'm treating a baby for what I believe to be navel ill. He's getting PenG, 1cc 2x daily. (Oh how I HATE giving him those shots!)

He's past due for the start of his cocci prevention - I delayed it because he was starting the antibiotic. Is it ok to continue to delay it? He came from a farm where cocci is an issue (lots of goats, lots more babies and lots of rain). I've already started his three older herd mates on their cocci prevention but he wasn't old enough when they were started. He'll be on the Pen G for at least 5 more days, possibly longer depending on the infection. I don't want to overload his system, but then again I don't want cocci to take him down while i'm trying to treat an infection.

FWIW, I'm not likely to be able to get a fecal either. He's chronically constipated - rarely poops on his own. I have to give him an enema once daily to get him to produce anything. He's becoming a very high maintenance goat! Since cocci sometimes presents with constipation I'm hoping that once he's treated he'll begin pooping on his own. He was bought to be a companion wether to the buckling I purchased - so far he's an awful lot of work to keep the buck happy. It's a good thing he's cute.

TIA!

I've never had a kid act 'off' w/ their dimethox dose....so I don't think, as long as he's acting ok, it'd hurt to go ahead and do it.
IMHO, a cocci bloom on top of navel ill is the worse evil in this case...

That's kinda where I was leaning. Outside of the near constant constipation he doesn't seem off at all. He's sucking down his bottles with vigor and running/playing like normal. I'm no longer seeing any oozing on his belly and I can't smell infection any longer. I *think* the bulge around his navel may be getting smaller. I just keep waiting for him to turn the corner on this pooping issue and it hasn't happened yet. I realize the antibiotic may cause some constipation - but he was constipated for nearly a week prior to the antibiotic. With last nights enema it appeared there may have been some blood in the yellow stools. It's difficult to tell for sure because he loves my barberry bush for snacking on and it has red leaves and berries - so it could be dietary - but in the back of my mind I couldn't help wonder if it might be cocci.

I did say it's a good thing he's cute, right?

I agree with Roll... compromised health can make them even more susceptible to coccidiosis. I'd keep him on schedule with his prevention to keep the cocci in check.

There is no medical contradiction to mixing sulfas and penicillin or pen-based antibiotics...
