What is the best way to compost straw bedding from the goat shelter? I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed w/ compost. I have kitchen compost, chicken manure & pine shaving compost, and goat manure w/ straw to compost. Do you throw them all together? Or leave straw/shaving/manure separate?

Everything goes into one pile here. Well, two piles. One older pile that is the one that will be spread next, and one newer pile that I currently am adding to.

I usually spread compost twice a year. If the older pile is not finished, I pitch the top stuff onto the newer pile until I reach finished compost, then spread it all, then start putting all new stuff in that spot and stop adding to the other pile for six months.

we have one big ol' pile - but to be honest i'm working on a new (to me!) way of handling it. i'm using the freshly used bedding from the ducks/geese/goats (but not chickens) to put directly into the garden. beside no ON the plants. i created high rows this year - a little over a foot high for the plants... then i'm putting the bedding in the gullies. i have horrible soil so i'm trying to solve a couple problems at once. so far so good.

kitchen compost? we call that chicken snacks! and soon to be pig snacks
