We used to run cows and horses together but the horses were pretty bossy to the cows and would even kick them and bite them. Maybe if they are younger horses they would be more accepting.

Depends on the horses. Even usually kindly horses can be hard on cattle. Especially true if cattle have no horns. But cow with horns can be REALLY hard on horses before they learn to look out. Horn wounds can be hard to heal, make some bad holes.

I would not even think of combining species in small areas, no place to get away from each other.

Young horses with no jobs like to play, geldings and stallions in particular. Just have a HUGE humor factor that makes them pester and pester! Older horses just bite or discipline young horses to keep them "in their herd place". But helpless cattle can be FUN to bite and chase around when there is nothing else to do. Some horses get a favorite cow, work it into the ground, never give cow any rest. Such horses need to be kept away from cattle all the time.
