I did a search for information, but it was several years ago. I am wondering if anyone can share their experience with cream separators? I am definitely wanting to make butter from my goat's milk, so I'm looking at them and would love to hear any personal experience. I will be milking 2 ND does in a few days. :)

I only ever had one... no idea what brand it was....

But I picked a mechanical one, verses an electrical.

Less parts to break, and it was easy and fast to spin it.

I bought mine used, those things cost a fortune.

But in general, it is a VERY simple concept.

Spin milk fast, and the fat separates out from the whey. Not much to go wrong. :idunno

So... I don't think it matters much what you specifically buy.

You want it stainless steel, and so it all comes apart to easily clean. TRULY amazing how fresh milk tries to stick a permanent film on everything.

I have! Mine is electric, fast, great, easy to use after first scary time. Then lots and lots to wash and store. 🤣 Really only 15 min. Bought lovingly used at an awesome deal.

But...always that, right? Goat butter does NOT taste like cow cream milk. Just so ya know. Yes, I set my cream out, after room temp, let it set and it will develop more flavor...6-12 hrs. Depends on temps, etc. Enzyme action happens. Then whip it, shake it, however you want. Be sure to rinse and get all whey out, otherwise it goes rancid. It will be pure white. Yes, I wanted butter! Love butter!!

Oh, yeah, back to separator. Got mine because 1) cheaper than a cow and I had many goats, whose cream doesn't separate well, like cow milk 2) because a guy 3 hrs away got rid of his goats and found no one to buy this, an expensive cheese press and some other "goat" things! I drove for a fantastic a deal!! A Cenatatop brand....but. They're all pretty much the same. A series of funnel looking pieces, assemble in a stack inside....milk in top (mine has stainless holder, 3gal capacity) spinner magically sends cream out one funnel, the milk out another. All liquids useable. Milk tastes like a 1%, cream lovely.

At time I shopped, this unit was $289. Now ? It has no other purpose but, if you have goats a good investment. Like a pressure canner ... Expensive but worth it over years. 😁. Many cheeses do better with extra cream, many people use cream in coffee. There's ice cream...get the drift?

Yes ... You can get some cream to rise on goat milk after a few day in frig, undisturbed. Spoon off into another glass container, from several milkings. After a few days you will have enought to make some butter. I've shaken in jar to do, add salt, shake. Rinse. Shake etc. or you can whip with mixer... Anyway, you may want to consider doing that a few times before the big spend, to get a feel/taste for product.

@Devonviolet had/has one. Maybe she'll post experience with.

Just a note...milk needs to be room temp to machine separate...or shake into butter. Cold won't work.

My goodness, thank you SO MUCH!! I have made butter before, both churned and with an electric blender. Goat milk butter was one of the things I wanted to make. I figured it wouldn't taste like cow cream butter, but I'm open to that. I just love butter... ;) When I mentioned wanting to make it to some friends, they made it sound like it would be almost impossible to make it, no idea why. "Oooohhhh, you'll need to get a cream separator", like it was some magical invention that was nearly impossible to come by. :rolleyes:

Originally I was just looking for a manual, hand crank separator, specifically to try out to make sure I liked the butter before investing in a more expensive electric model. Looked around on Amazon, but after realizing that sometimes specialty things on Amazon are not always the best quality, I thought I'd ask here for real life input.

I make my own butter now, usually small batches that only last a few days, so it is always fresh. I like the suggestion to skim the cream off by hand first to make sure I like it! Thanks for the input on it being room temperature. I'll be referring back to this thread. :)

Yes,, I HAD a cream separator, but sold it thee years ago after i had to sell my goats when I realized that I am allergic to goat milk.

@Mini Horses did a great job explaining how to use a cream separator to make cream from goat milk. It is a bit of work, because it is important to clean and dry it after each use. But it was worth it for all the lovely cream we made. Mini Horses was right, that goat milk butter doesn’t taste like cow’s butter. If memory serves me, it also tends to be softer and not easy to get all the whey out, making it a bit “wet” on toast.

I bought mine on eBay. It wasn’t cheap, but less than most places at the time.

FYI - I bought the following cream separator from a seller in Ukraine. Of course I paid a lot less five years ago. The seller I bought from doesn’t seem to be there anymore.

Thank you very much for the input! I'm really open to the difference between goat milk and cow milk butter. Honestly, I usually only eat it on my home made bread, typically right from the oven. I try to make some bread at least every other day. Right now, my goat milk is going to my bottle babies, but they'll be weaned soon, then I'll be trying it out in my coffee, making cheese, etc. So happy to this input!!
