Hello denizens of Backyard herds. Do people ever lease out goats? Like horse leases, where you pay the owner so you can take care of their animal. I would like to get experience in taking care of dairy animals (and because goats are awesome), but I might need to go away to college the school year after next and my property isn't zoned for goats. So do goat leases exist, and if they do how do I find one?

I'm sure they do, but personally I would not lease out my goats. I would do a part lease where the goat stays in my care as a way to be able to provide someone with milk. But I would want control of my animals.

Not saying you aren't wonderful, :p but I would be very nervous to send one of my goats out to a newbie.....remembering all my rookie mistakes. Goats are different from any other animal, it seems, and can go from healthy to dead overnight it seems. Quick recognition of the problem and quick action are both needed.

Oh, wait, do you mean you would go to the owner's property and care for the animal there? Got a strong back and are you willing to wield a shovel and pitchfork? I gotta a goat for you!!!!

I mean taking care of them on the owners property. I'd never let someone take care of one of my animals off site either.

Bet you can find something. I'd personally let you work off the lease. I can always use a hand here. Assuming I liked you! :p And you could stand being around me! :gig

It is pretty common around here with 4Hers. You could start by asking your local 4H group.

someone on here is leasing a goat in just the manner you mention. Her leased goat "Debbie" just kidded to twins this past week. Is that DreamingOfGoats? Anyone know? Memory doesn't serve as well as it should but I think she's doing exactly what your speaking of.

Whoever it is goes out and helps out, learning along side of the owners - like an apprenticeship.

Yep, that's me, but I'm a "Him" :)

I go there to take care of them, but they feed, water, and milk them. I just groom, show them, and help around the farm... I've learned to trim hooves, give antibiotics (Orally) and was shown how to give a sub-q shot but I haven't had to do that yet. Soon I'll learn how to tag a goats ear :D

I sent an e-mail to my local 4-H group! Hopefully they can put me in contact with someone who does stuff like this. :D

I'm so sorry! I should know better than to assume - forgive me? :p

I received a curt reply from the 4-H group, saying that they don't know anyone who does stuff like that. I think I may have accidentally insulted them. :(
