My doe kidded 2 weeks ago today. She had some minor limping at the end of her pregnancy that got worse after kidding. The vet didn't suspect a break or dislocation so he put her on an anti-inflammatory and recommended confining her. She is doing much better and I think I will stop her meds.

He told us we would have to dump the milk (or feed to other animals) while she was on it and wasn't sure for how long after she stopped the meds. Anyone know if I have to continue dumping and for how long? He prescribed Meloxicam. My doe is an Alpine Swiss. She gives the most milk (only 1 kid) so it is killing me to loose all that milk!

I would call the vet back. She should be able to tell you what the withdrawal time is for the med, or she should be able to find out for you.
But, if the med is off label for the goat, you may just have to go by something comparable.

I just googled "withdrawal time in milk for Meloxicam "
I didn't find anything for goats, but in lactating cows the elimination half life is 17.5 hours.
Which means in 17.5 hours half of it has been eliminated, and the remainder is reduced by half every 17.5 hours.
I think if you dump the milk for 4 days you would be OK.

Ok...I was giving the meds every other day. It was off-label use. I figured at least 4 days too. I am calling the vet back. He was supposed to call with that info along with my fecal results. This guy is super busy and goats aren't really high on his list of priorities. Unfortunately, I think he is my only option for large animal vets in my area. He is more of a horse and cow guy.

I have no idea how to make soap yet...I wish I did. I just purchased a cream separator and everything....and I am dumping the majority of the milk. :(
I was looking at farad.org and can't find meloxicam on the site...it looks like the inquiry is only for vets....

I don't know....something worth researching...I have been giving it to the chickens. My dog loved it a little too much and puked it all up. :( Someone also suggested pouring it in the garden...I have resorted to reading complicated research studies on this drug to figure out when it is safe.

Found an article that said 15 days for meat and 5 days for milk but that was for cattle. Would you assume 5 days or less? Or more?
