Loving the herd life
Ok, I mentioned a few weeks ago that we had bought twin yearling does, and that one had turned out to be pregnant. Well, this morning, out of the blue, she had a beautiful buckling! She didn't have much of a bag yet so I didn't think she was quite ready yet. But when I went out to feed, I heard a tiny voice, looked around in the pen and saw she had just had a baby. Got her right in the barn and got a heat lamp on him, it has turned chilly here and he was shivering a little. But he is big and strong and doing just fine.
Strange thing though, since they kind of got unattached when we put them in the stall....we went ahead and milked some colostrum to squirt in his mouth and it was think as pudding. I have never seen this before. I smells sweet and looks good except very very thick. We did that several times, then in an hour he was up trying to nurse, we helped him get hooked on and he has been nursing ever since and doesn't act hungry so I assume he is able to get that thick stuff out! Anyone ever had colostrum this thick before?
