Don't have one make my yogurt in a crockpot. Comes out great.
Would you mind giving me your recipe and instructions? I tried it once (not with a crockpot, but an electric skillet) and it didn't turn out great. So, I was thinking about getting a yogurt maker. But, I would love to hear what you do.

I was going to get a yogurt maker then I saw how little it made. I use the cooler method described somewhere on this site....or was it on byc before byh was born? It is also discussed on sufficientself. I make 8-9 quarts at a time since it keeps so well. I make it in canning jars in a big plastic cooler, filling it with hot tap water and insulating it with all my loose pillows and blankets in the winter (I've even used the couch cushions on a really cold night! ) and less insulation in the summer.

Recipe for Crockpot Yogurt

I use an older early 80's smallish crockpot with glass lid, works MUCH better than my new bigger one with plastic lid.

1/2 gal milk (I use raw goat) (cows milk fine too)
1 cup plain Yogurt with live active cultures (for future batches save 1 cup yogurt before adding flavorings)

Pour milk into crockpot turn on high. Heat milk to 180. (takes a couple hours). Turn off crockpot. Let cool to 116. (make sure no hotter or won't set, use thermometer) Stir in yogurt. Put lid on. Wrap the crockpot (sides/top) snugly in a thick towel or 2. Keep in a draftfree place.

Leave alone for 8 hours or more. (I make it in evening and I leave it overnite)

I put a couple tablespoons of homemade jam or strawberry rhubarb sauce in the bottom of glass jelly jars then scoop the yogurt on the top and chill. (I like the plastic canning jar lids)Can also use it plain in recipes or plain with fruit, granola etc.

Remember to reserve 1 cup without flavorings for your next batch!

To make yogurt cheese (it's like cream cheese, great on bagels!) pour homeade yogurt into a cheesecloth lined bowl. (not wide holed cheesecloth use the muslin stuff) Fold up corners, tie, and hang to drain for12-24 hrs. (I hang it on my wooden papertowel hanger with a bowl under, I rubberband the cheesecloth leaving a "loop" to put the rod thru). Can hang it from a cupboard knob with a bit of string.
