Hi! We are new to goats and recently had our first birth here. Nigerian dwarfs. She had her 2 babies almost three weeks ago. It was her first birth and everything went smoothly. She is just over 1 year old. The pregnancy was a whoopsie due to us being so new at this. The mama has been twitching the last few days. Heavily twitching. Like her leg lifts when she twitches. She also keeps licking the air or her lips I'm not sure. She has plenty of access to hay and water 24/7 and is also on goat pellets from minor bros. I'd say she looks a bit bloated as she's currently bigger than she was after she gave birth. She is also leaking a brownish fluid from her vagina that I didn't notice until about a day ago. It isn't heavy but occasional (I assumed this was leakage after birth since the babies are not quite three weeks old but I honestly have no idea). Not sure if these two issues are related. Quite stressed out about it and couldn't get through to my vet today. Any help is appreciated!!! Thankyou in advance!

Any update today?

Have you taken her temperature?

Also... are her eyelids pale?

Is she eating and drinking well?

Does she have access to any minerals?

I have t taken her temp. Her eyelids are not pale. She's eating and drinking very well and has acces to a mineral and salt lick. Not sure if she needs another kind of minerals or something..? She actually does seem a bit better today. Not as bloated looking or twitching as much. Also haven't noticed anything leaking from her vagina today. I've gotten ahold of my vet and they don't seem super concerned because her apt isn't for another two days 🤷‍♀️. I've read that milk of magnesia and then yogurt or probios can help with the rumen so I'm doing that today! 🤞

Try some calcium. Twitching look almost like hiccups?

So you may want to take some of the discharge to vet to culture. Color? Smell? Often they DO have some discharge. But a culture should be inexpensive...and a quick confirm of situation.

Thanks! We gave her some tums and a probiotic last night and she seems way better today!

The milk production could have caused her calcium levels to drop too low.

Your feed store might have a calcium and magnesium paste, or in a powder that you mix with water.

Check the dosage depending on what is available... but that might be what she needs.

A mineral and salt lick, as in a mineral block? In general, goats can't get enough minerals from a block. They might have fun licking it... so you can leave it out... but also put out a free feeder with loose goat minerals.

However... ... if the twitching was due to low calcium... loose minerals probably wouldn't have helped much. Still good for many other things though!
