I just found out this morning that my thirteen month old Boer doe has a pinkish reddish blob coming out of her vagina. She is not eating as well and keeps trying to push it. She is still with the buck, but is about a month away from kidding. What should I do?

Have you had the vet out to see if this is a prolapse? Sometimes, pressure from a large kid load can cause temporary threats of prolapse.

To prevent a prolapse and allow the doe to kid you can use a prolapse retainer and harness which can be ordered from a livestock supply catalog. If you can't get them in time and are afraid the doe will lose her kids, you can sew her up to prevent premature loss of the kids as an emergency measure.

You should not do this procedure if you are not sure when she is definitely due to kid. Only do this is=f you know her date of breeding and kidding. This is an emergency procedure only. Use dental floss and a carpet needle. Soak both in alcohol to disinfect. Use cold water to help shrink any tissue poking out and use an antibacterial gel (antibacterial soap is also good) to cover your gloved fingers and gently push the tissues back inside. Then disinfect the skin. Thread the needle with the dental floss leaving a tail about 12" long. Inserting the needle at one side of the vaginal opening, make an X across the vaginal opening. Then tie the ends of the dental floss in a knot. This X will allow her to pee but should keep her from pushing out the tissues. You will need to cut the dental floss to allow her to give birth. Using the prolapse retainer and harness is better and easier. The doe can actually give birth wearing the prolapse harness.

If this doe is actually prolapsing you should know that a tendency to prolapse is often genetic. Once a doe has prolapsed, the tendency to repeat prolapse is usually there.
