My farrier told me today that he had a client who had a horse who had problems keeping shoes on due to stamping flies all the time.

My mare is barefoot, but she had some chipping this time due to stamping flies. She's really sensitive to flies and I was wondering more about these fly leg wraps?

Does anyone use them? When do you put them on the horse, just out in the pasture? Do they really help that much?

The ones I tried fell off in the pasture!! :rant
Here's something that I've been doing lately--I mixed up some Fly Repellant Shampoo, that I brush on when I groom to ride to clean off my horses' lower legs. That, and flywipe is making a difference in our rides. I'm sure it would to same in the pasture, as well as keeping the grass mowed where they don't eat it.

They help a lot until they slouch and fall down. Then they can actually cause *more* stomping from some horses as they try to get the %#*$#@ things offa them; or at best, they become useless. They do not stay on extensively-turned-out horses very well, at least not once they are no longer brand new.

IME they don't slouch down real bad for the first couple weeks of use, but then they get "tired" and soon slouch down right away no matter what you do. There were some new ones that came onto the market maybe 5 years ago (ish?) that had thin nylon boning up the back, that were supposed to not slouch down that way -- I have no experience with those, though.

IMHO they are worthwhile to consider for *brief* use, e.g. for just a couple weeks on a stalled injured horse or for just a couple hours a day for those (poor) horses that only get a few hrs of turnout anyhow; but otherwise, they are not really much of a solution. Fly spray is better.

JME, good luck, have fun,

Pat
