Does she have appy in her or just strange markings?

I never thought about it but someone asked if my horse, Meadow, had appy in her. I'm not sure, what do you think? Could it just be weird makings? :idunno

She has some spots on the other side too.

Attractive paint job! (no pun intended :p)

IMO certainly *could* be a pintaloosa (the term I've most often heard used for horses that are both paint/pinto and appaloosa), in a leopard kind of way. The size and number of the chestnut spots on the white areas is certainly very unusual for a normal paint/pinto. I am reserving some certainty simply because I dont' recall ever having seen a *leopard* pintaloosa (I know they exist, it's just that the only paint/app crosses I've seen have had other app patterns, that show up in the *solid* not white parts) so I dont' ahve good basis for comparison.

Look closely at her inner eyelids and the sclera around the eye, are they mottled at all? (Not diagnostic, but if they are, more likely that she does have App in her)

Good luck, have fun, cute horse :),

I would say that more than likely she is full Paint. A lot of the homozygous paints have the little spots like that all over them. They are called ink spots.

Go to this site and scroll to the bottom and you will see some of these have the same spots as your mare.

a lot of homozygous Tobiano's will have spots like that, but usually they are closer together...I don't feel that she is an appaloosa at all...just looks like Tobiano with Sabino (small chance it could be splash white instead of Sabino, but I'm going with Sabino from what I can see)

www.equine-color.info is a great place if you ever want to learn about coat color genetics on horses.

Looks like the "ink spots" or "paw prints" of a (most likely) homozygous Tobi to me. The appaloosa gene doesn't put colored hairs in the white areas of a pinto, it puts spots in the colored areas. If this mare was a leopard pintaloosa, she would have areas with leopard spots, and areas with only white hair.

spots in the colored areas? White spots or colored spots?

I'm not very saavy on the genes of horses unless it refers to palomino... :D

Please forgive me if I'm hijacking!
