Ridin' The Range
Just like the title says, but let me be more explicit.
I'd like to put the two pigs (I won't say "piglet!"
) away from our house on the overgrown weedy thorny part which they can rip up for us. But i'd also like to be able to move the pen so they don't ruin the area. Or is this not necessary since they won't be there that long?
Anyway, the pen also should be reasonably easy for two able-bodied young people to construct. I don't want my dad to have to help.
I was thinking of using livestock panels and t-posts but that isn't very portable...or IS it? Is 32 sq ft too much room for two bacon-destined pigs?
I decided not to do it with 4-H, because I don't think they have a hog club anymore and I just want some bacon! And pork! and ham! and lard....
Another question I had was about the scraps to purchased hog feed ratio. In other words, what DO I feed them??? I actually have a good idea and have done research and read books, but wanted some advice. We want to feed the pig all our excess eggs, sour milk, old vegetables, etc.
Plus, I just LIKE pigs, and I respect them as a great homestead animal that won't need all of our 3.9 acres. I may even get into breeding them if this goes well.
