Email etiquette when asking about cattle for sale?

I'm looking to purchase a feeder calf (for a 4-H project) so I've been doing some research lately on who to buy from. I came across a website that had some high quality calves for sale in my area. On their page, they said to email or call for any inquiries. So as I was about to email them, I kinda got stuck. I'm totally new to this, but I'm looking for a feeder calf that is the perfect age so that next year around fair season (April) he will be heavy enough to be shown as a steer (1500 to 2000 lbs?). I'm tripping out on how to bring this up to them. I'm also pretty uneducated about breeds and crosses and all that stuff (I'm getting on it, I promise) so I'm not really sure how to tell them about my situation.

So I guess my real question here is how do I send them an email to let them know I mean business but not seem like an amateur - even though i totally am. What kind of information should I let them know and what kind of questions do I ask? Are there some sort of unspoken rules when emailing a seller?

Thanks for hearing me out lol!

I would talk to the 4H leaders first, I don't think you need the steer to be that big, most good size 2-3 year old bulls are about that weight. I also don't think I would worry about letting the breeders know you are a newbie to cattle, they could help you out a lot if they know you are new and want a nice show quality steer calf. Just be honest and straight forward on what you are looking for and a price you have in mind. 4H show quality weaned show steers here are going for about $1800

Your 4-H leaders and parents will have some ideas where to look for your animals and what to look for in a particular animal. The Internet is another good choice.

When emailing just tell them what you are looking for and if they have nothing available, do they know of anyone else who might.

A lot of the sellers are real good about giving you any advice and support. We always try to show up at the fair on show day to support the kids as do many of the sellers.

Good luck. It's a wonderful experience and one you won't ever forget.
