Feeding Crias

We're 2 weeks into our first cria experience, and he is awesome!! He is nursing, but I will see him nibbling hay with mom and big sis? Is this normal, is this ok for him to do?

One word - Yes

He may or may not actually be ingesting it. No matter what, it is fine for him to eat hay. He probably is nibbling on grass too if he is in a pasture. Congratulations on your new little guy.

That's completely normal. Crias start copying momma by nibbling at the grass and hay within a week of birth.

Thanks for helping! Kuzco is doing awesome. He's running around like crazy now. I see him nursing, but I keep seeing him nibble hay with mom and big sis. I'm glad to know it's normal, I was afraid he wasn't getting enough milk.

Sonja - I generally weigh my crias every day for the first (roughly) two weeks and then every other week for a month just to make sure they are gaining weight. We use our bathroom scale to weigh them. Doing that might help you feel better about Kuzco getting enough milk.
