I have read that rabbits need to be bred for the first time before they are 10 months old. The pair of CalifornianXNZ I've been raising will be 10 months old the middle of Febuary. I have an operation scheduled Feb 22nd. I thought I would breed them the day before my operation and by the time my doe kindles I will be mostly recovered and ready for the babies. Am I waiting too long to breed this doe or am I still within an acceptable window?

What I've heard is that it's best to breed for the first time before a doe is a year old. She can still be bred after that, but she has a better chance of accumulating fat around her ovaries which hinders conception. With that being said, I heard of does older than a year being bred successfully for the first time.

She'll be fine to breed :) It's after a year when I get kind of iffy about it, but I've bred one over a year and she turned out to be a fantastic mom. Good luck!
