Terra Patre Farm, (Est. 1740), in Belen, New Mexico is part of the land ceded to the US in 1848 via the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, (https://www.archives.gov/education/...ht an official end,the advance of U.S. forces).
Many of my family are heirs of the Belen Land Grant awarded by the King of Spain in 1742, where we have been living continually to present day. Originally over 200 acres, this farm/ranch, only 20 acres remain today.
It is now dedicated to saving and preserving the heritage and legacy of the first domestic sheep brought to the US Southwest in 1540 by El Dorado seeker, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. Gone feral, Coronado's sheep, over the past almost 500 years inter-bred with native Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep and evolved into present day New Mexico Dahl Heritage hair sheep; scientifically traced back to ancient Spanish breeds, Xisqueta Sheep and Ripollesa Sheep, by geneticist Rasmus Nielsen, Professor, Sackler Chair of Computational Biology at the UC Berkley genetics lab) 2020.
