We have a large shed that we use as the goats "house". The shed has no floor and when we put the shed back there YEARS ago as a storage shed, we threw down a tarp to set it on so what was in there did not sit right in the dirt. Well, we have since cleaned it out but the tarp is still there. We had been putting hay down so they were laying right on the tarp. is that ok? how often should we change the hay out, daily? OR can we just leave the ground bare (we are working on pulling up the tarp so the goats do not eat it, so far they have left it alone) and find something like a cot that they can lay on so they aren't sleeping on a hard ground? Also, what do you do with all your old hay?

I have a tarp down over top a wood floor in a shed for my chickens. However I did that to protect the wood. A dirt floor is okay for animals, you can even throw some straw down to make it more warm and comfy. I don't clean out the barn that often. I just keep adding onto it. The chickens, yes, because they smell bad, but sheep/goats? Nope.

I cleaned mine out about every 2 weeks in the summer. But when winter came i would let it build up a bit. Its supposed to create heat. But it is a huge hassle to clean up come spring. So i wont do that anymore. Likely try to clean out once a month in the new shelter. The ammonia from the urine isnt to great for the lungs. Yours or the goats.
