I saw on here a week ago of a mixture of whole milk and other items to bottle feed goats. I've been milking the mom and then feeding the babies, but I'm not sure how much longer that will last.

I think it is mixing evaporated milk and butter milk. The easiest would be just whole cow milk...no mixing and works.

take a gallon of whole milk, pour out enough to add one cup of buttermilk and one can of evaporated milk.

some people do use just whole milk, I like adding a little more to it, to up the protein.

We do the same. I some sometimes add yogurt or powdered probiotics if I think it is needed.

yes, I also sometimes add those things. As well as some honey, but honey is so expensive I dont do it very often anymore.

There is another formula out there that is more complicated with eggs and whipping cream and other ingredients. Some of the big Boer breeders use it, because it has a better protein level, but I find it really expensive. I have always wanted to try it. The below is copied from another place.

Here it is:
I would like to try it, but husband would probably think I lost my mind mixing all those things.
1/4C whipping cream
1 large egg
1cup non fat dry milk and
3 cups ofwater
Mix in blender makes 30 oz..
For a larger batch, I double everything except for using 1/3 cup whipping cream. ...
I have had to triple and do the following 3 eggs 3 cups powdered milk 1/4 cup whipping cream 1/3 cup whipping cream 2 cups water Mix in blender Add to 7 cups of water (9 cups water total) This makes about 3/4 of a gallon
Schedule 1-2 day old kids should receive 4 to 6 ounces 4 times a day
3-7 day old kids 8-10 ounces 3 times a day
1-2 week old kids 12- 14 ounces 3 times a day
3-6 week old kids 16-20 ounces 2 times a day
7-8 weeks 20 ounces two times a day depending on when you choose to wean ( most do so at 12 weeks I do so at 10) you can gradually start decreasing the amount of milk over the last 2 weeks.

We posted this on the 8th:

We have raised a few bottle babies and found the best recipe to be:

1 gallon whole milk
1 12 oz. can evaporated milk
1 cup whole buttermilk*

*if you can't find whole buttermilk you can substitute 1/2 cup low fat buttermilk and 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

Pour off 2 1/2 cups from the gallon of milk. Pour in all ingredients and shake well each time you want to use it.

The kids that were raised on this mixture grew as well as the dam raised kids we had that year.

Thanks for that substitution with the buttermilk, I have always wondered about the non-fat buttermilk, that is all I can find. That never made sense to me. Will be adding some whipping cream next time.

Thanks guys and gals! I got about 8 oz from mom last night, mixed it with the formula and fed the kids at midnight. Both took about 6 oz. This morning at 6 AM they took straight formula. Both kids seem to be doing good. I'd take pictures today, but it is 30 degrees and rainy/snowy. I'll have to wait until it gets a little nicer out.
