I am going to get a GP on either Saturday or Monday. He is 10 months old. I have been doing alot of research on them. Can anyone add any info on training them to take care of livestock. I have goats, chickens and guinea's. I am so excited I can not stand it. It is a rescue group in NC. We are getting him for free well the nice man is getting a few guinea's for him. Ok so I am wondering because I went on to petfinder and found his picture. This is what was posted.Sam is mostly Great Pyrenees. He is an owner surrender. Seems he got a little too playful with some goats, and he's out! He's a good boy, and will probably make a good Livestock Guardian Dog.
He is also Anatolian Shepherd. Is this a good dog?

Was he socialized with poultry at an early age? If not then he may not be reliable with your birds. Our 8 month old LGD pup was socialized with chickens to some degree during the first few months, but he's still not reliable with chickens. We caught him with one of our Orps between his paws once. She had apparently resigned herself to her fate and just laid there while he pulled a few feathers out, but once we recovered her she was fine. It seems to be more of a chase/play behavior than real prey drive, but that doesn't mean he can't do damage. Just don't expect him to be great with poultry right off the bat, even if he's been properly socialized with four-leggeds.

And congrats!! :)

He's only 10 months old, right? Of course he is prone to being too playful with goats. He should not have been with goats unattended anyway at that age. He's still a big puppy. He may do just fine for you. anatolians are my prefered breed. They are big, have shorter hair so they can handle the southern climate better and they are awesome guardian and watch dogs. Some can be aggressive if not raised right.

That's the sort of situation that calls for a great deal of caution, IMO. Ask the right question of the foster owner and expect the right answers. "He will probably make a good LGD" is a pretty subjective opinion and you want to be sure it's backed up with knowledge and personal experience and that the dog has been tested with the types of livestock you own.

I'm sure he's a nice guy, but there is another GP rescue group that evaluates what type of home and farm their GPs will do best with. If you want their info, PM me.
