I am soooooooooooooo excited, we are getting our rabbits this weekend....and I am meeting the seller through BYH, is that not cool?

I'm getting four Creme D' Argent rabbits, two breeding pairs essentially, when the younger two grow up a little more. We are going to raise them as meat rabbits but also want to sell some as pets and/or show rabbits. I think these are the most gorgeous rabbits I've ever seen! Of course I am partial. :)

I'm so thrilled that BYH has introduced me to the seller....I feel so fortunate! This forum has really been a lifesaver for me and now it has given me a chance to buy something a little out of the ordinary.

I plan to sell the best offspring, stock the freezer with thr rest and use both hides and meat, but I will consider these first four my "pets" and they will retire eventually, not ever become dinner, so I am free to love them. :love My goal will be for the bunny sales to help offset the cost of their feed so that we get much of our family's meat without as much investment. And being self sustaining feels like the right goal for these economic times.

My hubby says their hutches will be done by Sunday. We have these recycled huge metal cages that just need to have roofs put on them and a more tight mesh on the metal floor. And of course be filled with supplies for them. Because the weather is currently so cold, I bought an extra bale of hay and I thought I would really fill these cages with hay so they can keep warm in it as well. We made extra large cages but I wonder if that will make it harder for them to keep themselves warm and perhaps I should make a smaller enclosure within the bigger one? I was going to make nests later for the does but perhaps I should make a little warming box for each. Our temps are down into the 30s at night with occasional nights in the 20s and the four do not share space.

If anyone has suggestions for how to set up a rabbitry please feel free to end them. My wonderful seller is advising me, but I'm always interested in learning about animal care, although I feel a little better equipped for rabbits than I did for my other livestock.

They are working out really well! The cages function nicely and the rabbits are very sweet ones. I'm enjoying caring for them. So far, this has been a cinch!

We are already saving up their poo and devising plans for what to do with it......
