I wasn't real sure I wanted to get more baby calves after having to put my last one down, but I couldn't pass these up. One is a month old Red Angus heifer, and the other is a 10 day old Angus/ Charlois mix heifer. I'll be picking them up on Sat.
How soon can I get them on a pail instead of a bottle. What kind of feed should I start them on, sweet feed or pelleted calf starter? I'll try to get photos when I get them home.

We have Holstein dairy calves. The calves each get two to three bottles to drink in the first 24 hours before the esphogal(sp?) groove closes. Then I switch them to a bucket. You may have an easier time of switching the younger one since the older one has had a bottle longer. We put a pelleted calf starter feed in front on them as soon as they know how to drink from a bucket.

I picked up my calves today, they are already eating pellets and hay, and drinking water. They are still on the bottle. The red one is just over a month, and the white one is about 2 weeks. I'm trying to get the red one on a pail, the little white one isn't eating as well, so I'm going to leave her on the bottle for a little while longer.
The red one was sucking on the white ones navel so I put a light wrap on her to keep the red one away from that area. I want to keep them together as the little white one is learing to eat the pellets and hay from the red one.

They are cute! I would think if they can drink water out of a pail, they could do milk. I don't usually leave water in front of my calves full time until they're weaned. Some of them will fill up on water, but guess that would be a case by case call. That's a good plan using the wrap over the navel. Where I worked, they would put bad tasting stuff over it, but a really dedicated sucker would get it off in no time.
