Herd Master
So, for 2 years we have been using old wire dog kennels with holes cut in them as feeders. They work fine, but every couple weeks i have to pull one of my horned goats out and snip another set of wire or what have you. They are falling apart!
We hit a deer with our car so it has been in the shop and we have been driving the poor truck to the city. On our drive, outside a glass place, they have a free wood sign and the wood panels and dividers from their glass shipments. With these prefabbed sections, we have put together two feeders with the mere addition of screws (i may paint them in better weather). You could make these even stronger with the addition of some metal corner bracing, but ours are supported on one side by a fence or wall.
I put this feeder together today (in -48c windchill!!!) For the sheep. Its shorter than our goats' version, but would work for both.
Sorry if these images appear the wrong way! Uploaded from cell phone.
There are 2 sides and 2 long panels
I start with one corner so itll stand on its own
And attach the other long side. The smaller end is easier to manipulate as a last piece than the bigger one!
All put together
Being used!
I hope this helps someome whos looking for a simple, frugal, upcycling solution for a feeder! This has done well even with our horned girls as they cant force their horns past the wood like they can the wire so: if they can get their head in, they can get it out!
