Hello everyone,
This will be our first year breeding our goats. We have been putting off breeding them until this year because we did not have the space to breed them. We got a 6 by 8 shed for 150 dollars on Craigslist last week to use along with our current goat house. However it quickly was turned into a tool/garden shed before we knew what hit us :). Anyways long story short, we have decided we will be building an edition to our existing goat house, starting this weekend. The edition will mainly be used for milking and storage unless the goats are kidding or have just kidded. I have a few questions mainly about the layout of the structure. Firstly, how large is a good sized kidding stall for a goat? Is it a good idea to add a gate from the edition to the existing structure or would it not make a difference ? What do you think is the easiest door to construct as an outside barn door? We made a door for the existing structure that is a normal sliding barn door but it hasn't worked real well because it is constantly getting stuck on bedding. What do you think would be the best type of flooring in terms of construction, management and insulation to use, we live in NH by the way? Should we add electricity and running water to the edition or is it unnessecary? We only have 2 goats at the moment and are planning at only having around 3-4 ,even though that may change in the future :). We will be breeding them both goats and I have heard that some people construct built in boxes for the kids to use after they are born, to keep them warm, is that a good idea? Finally do you have any suggestions for how to make the structure more functional or goat hardy etc? Any tips or suggestions, warning or tips are greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!
