What Are Goats?
Goats, also known as caprines, are small ruminants, meaning much like cows they have four stomach chambers. They are all very very different than your stereotypical goat, and they all have their own unique extraordinary personalities. They all have different purposes and temperaments. Let’s get into that.
There are multiple types of goats. They are not all used for milk, they do not all have horns, they are not all like the stereotypes.
Dairy Goats (not the stereotypes)
Dairy goats are bred for well producing milk. In the goat world however, they are used for many other things. My family breeds dairy goats for show, milk, and believe it or not, more. There are huge goat shows with hundreds of people and hundreds of goats. There is so many more things to go into detail about and so many more purposes.
They can be used for show, milk, or just as pets. There’s different breeds that people probably don’t even know about! For example, you’ve probably heard of the cute little mini goats who waddle around all tiny and cute, (Nigerian dwarf) but have you ever heard of the breed with the cute tiny little ears? (LaMancha) Most likely not, right? If yes I'm assuming you have/ have had goats.
Registration and Why?
Ever heard of ADGA (American Dairy Goat Association) or AGS (American Goat Society). These are goat memberships. You can sign up to show, milk test, etc. You can also raise higher quality and higher value goats and disease tracking as well as so much more! I highly recommend that you look into this.
Breed
The main dairy goat breeds include Saanen, Sable, Lamancha, Alpine, Toggenburg, Oberhasli, Nigerian Dwarf, Nubian, and the newly added Guernsey. More goats commonly known as recorded grades and experimentals are often mistaken to be the same thing, when in fact they are not. Experimentals are multiple breeds of goats bred together, while a recorded grade can be any breed (or breeds) of goat with an unclear ancestry or pedigree.
There is so much more that could be said on dairy goats, but there's so many other goats out there who need loving.
