I just bought two Nigerian Dwarf does this week and am new to keeping goats. One of them they said is blind in one eye and is losing her sight in the other. I have a friend who said it sounds like she just has pink eye and that treating it with some port wine will clear it up and she will regain her vision. Her right eye is completely white and her left eye is cloudy and she has goop and drainage. The other goat started getting crust and goop in her one eye but it is now clear since we have been washing their eyes for two days. Could this really just be pink eye?

Yes, it could very well be pink eye and it can be contagious. She could clear up and regain her vision. Not sure about treating it with wine, I am sure there are more traditional ways of treating. Google it :)

As babs said, it is very contagious, spread by flies. Make sure you wear gloves or wash well between treating each goat, and I would also when going from one eye to the other. If you get it under control you can save their vision.

The owners before us had her for four months and did nothing about her eyes, didn't even research any treatments or have her seen by anyone so I really have no idea what is wrong with her eyes.

I have never dealt with it so I don't know what is "too far gone" but I have heard of some miraculous recoveries. To be honest, I would take her to the vet; any animal on my farm that is worth owning is worth treating. It is a shame that the previous owners did nothing for her. Hopefully she will recover and be a great goat for you, she certainly deserves a chance and I wouldn't mess with Port Wine, get the real meds that she needs.

I am not anti organic or holistic, but eyes that are already compromised may benefit from a "real" antibiotic. Wine may do ok to treat a new case, but I wouldn't take my chances on an advanced case; I think that time is of the essence for her.

I agree with Babsbag - the goat needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Hope she has a chance of recovery!
