I've been on BYC for a few months now, and we got our first goat kids about a month ago. We live in Tyrone Township, MI, south of Fenton and Flint, on 14 acres, and plan to grow our herd over time through acquisitions and breeding. For now, we just have two girls, one is a Togg/Alpine mix named Heidi, and the other is a Togg/LaMancha mix named Gidget. Both have the same father, a Togg named Elvis, so they are cousins. :D We adore them - they are bottle babies and I am going to be working on weaning them over the next couple of weeks as they are two months old.

We want to have milk for our own consumption, as well as cheesemaking for ourselves and hopefully, to sell in the future. I was laid off from a job of almost a decade last year in a massive downsizing at a magazine publisher, and so I'm trying to build a job for myself as a agripreneur, to quote Joel Salatin. :) We also have chickens and the previous owners of the house left us bee-boxes, but I need to find someone local to come show me the ropes on that. My vision is to have eggs, honey, goat cheese, and produce offerings in the future.

We attended the MDGA Goat Day at MSU on 13 March and enjoyed what we learned there, and are looking forward to the magazine they publish.

Hi to everyone here and glad there is a place to discuss goats! :)

:welcome fellow Michiganiac!

I'm a little further north of you, between Standish and West Branch. MDGA has an excellent newsletter with lots of good articles.
