Chillin' with the herd
Hello, I have enjoyed reading this forum for a month now. I thought I would introduce myself. I'm Kelly, I have 5 kids (human - I think). After much discussion over the past years and this summer my husband and I decided we would turn our 16 acre property into a ranch. We have been caring for a Lowland Angus and love her, her prior owners got tired of the cow thing and paying my son to care for her so we asked to keep her. I started looking for a bull for her and realized localish Lowland Bulls or calves are out of my price range and looking for other animals. So far we have 4 Shetland Sheep, we will pick up 5 Dexter Cattle this weekend. One of our former tenants is currently overseas so we also are taking care of his horse.
In true cart before the horse method that our family seems to live we decided the fencing we have isn't good enough and ripped it out only to find the High Tensile Wire fencing we want to put up is very hard to find here. Luckily we did not rip out the fencing in one small pasture so the Dexters and our Lowland will stay there until we re-fence the pasture we had planned on putting the cattle in. Currently our cow Onyx is in a temporary electric fence area with the sheep, but I worry about having 6 cattle in it. We will be using telephone poles as fence posts because we have access to several. We think we have found the wire and supplies we need to do the fencing without having to have it shipped from the other side of the rockies. Instead of going to the fencing store my darling husband put the auger into the water line and went shopping for plumbing parts.
I can not figure out how to post pictures on this but I have started a blog if you want to see our current animals. Sorry it will not allow me to give a web address and I enjoy this forum too much to mess with the rules.
