Hello! I am 19 years young and I live with my mom in the suburbs but I visit my dad everyday on his farm. So I guess I get the best of both worlds! Lol. So far I just have three chickens and two dogs, but I am looking into getting some meat rabbits and goats. When I was in FFA I used to raise pigs and I miss doing that. I LOVE pigs. So maybe I'll get into raising pigs again haha.

:welcome Sounds like we have a couple things in common, I used to raise pigs, and they are by far my favorite species of livestock to work with. But we moved and our area and our farm is no longer suited for pigs. We now raise goats and meat rabbits. WE have a lot of goats, but the meat rabbits are really just a small hobby for my youngest son, so we haven't gotten really big into that.

Our biggest difference is age, since I am, well lets just say, a couple years older than 19, but still feeling pretty young.

Have you considered an education in agriculture or animal science?

I only raised two pigs during high school, but it was so interesting working with them everyday and they all have their own personalities. My first pig was soo sweet and I have to admit I did cry after I sold her. My second pig was absolutely horrible, so I was kind of relieved after he was gone haha.

And yes I have! I wanted to be an ag teacher, but I've heard that there isn't really a demand for them in my area and it would be hard finding a job. I would love some kind of career working with animals though. :)

In my area, our ag teachers are realllly old, so there is a big demand for them here since many of them are retiring.

BTW, :welcome

there are a lot of possiblities if you do something in animal science and business. I have a degree in animal science with an emphasis in chemistry and my husband has a degree in Agricultural ecenomics, and we have both had good paying jobs in commercial industries.

We actually met, after college working on a large, very very large hog farm. 1,000 sows per farm.

Now my husband works in the turkey industry and I stay home with the children and raise a small herd of goats. Where my husband works right now, they are on occasion looking for a college graduates with a 4 year degree in any agricultural area, to train to be a service person on the farms. That is a person that works for the company, and helps the grower(farmer), who has a contract to grow turkeys for the company. Sorry, if I didnt' explain that very well. That isn't what my husband does anymore, but initially when he was hired, service person was his job title.

so my advice would be to do a general agriculture animal husbandry major and emphasize computers and/or business. I worked my way through college working on a smaller hog farm with 150 breeding sows. It was an eye opening experience at the age of 19. I had been around animals, horses and dairy cattle, but never hogs. I really enjoy raising hogs. by far my favorite. But due to where packing plants are located, not all areas of the united states have a viable hog industry.

sorry for rambling on.
