We have 4 kids in a pen because a couple looked sick. They are all 3 months old. Let me start off by telling you, we check our goats quite often.
Yesterday afternoon I went out, and found 1 white cashemere buck kid lying dead in it's shelter. No outward sign of injury or illness. So sad. We thought he was doing great, and knew he might have some issues since his mom was very sick with pnemonia during the end of her pregnancy with him.
I further checked out the other 7 kids, and 1 white cashemere kid (little buck), was lying by his mom, and he seemed so weak. Usually the kids see me and jump up and run. This one tried to, then layed back down, like he didn't have the strength to move. I picked him up and brought him into the barn, gave him some Ivomec Plus wormer, and set him in a pen, with some goat food and water. Moving on, there was another baby kid out there just laying there screaming. Same thing when I walked up to him. So, I brought him into the barn as well, gave him some wormer and food/water. My mom and I decided we better get all the kids in there to worm them again and give them food/water. We caught 2 more, 1 girl and 1 boy. We wormed them and gave them food/water. Those 2 seem fine (boy/girl). The other 3 we could not catch, in which we'll get them this morning. (We used up alot of energy hoof trimming and giving shots to our bucks).
So, upon checking the white and black bucks this morning. My mom told me the white kid, is still laying there, and it looked like he had been sick overnite. And the other black kid was just laying there, and the other 2 were up and looked ok.
Has a plague hit my kids? What do we do with the 2 that look so weak? Is a vet trip necessary. Has anyone experienced this before? My biggest question is where do we start? What do we do next?
I'm so worried about our kids! Thank you for any information! We have been looking thru every goat book we can find in the house and also are checking all our websites on goats, but haven't found very much yet. Thanks again!

I would start a coccidiosis treatment ASAP...sulfadimethoxine or another sulfa drug. Even if it turns out to be something else a sulfa drug won't hurt them...But if it is an over-exposure to cocci it will save their lives and you will see improvement in their condition in a few days...A B-complex vitamin shot along with an iron shot would be a good supportive care measure, as well...JMO
....I would treat all the kids the same way...they may have come into contact with a stronger than usual strain of cocci...and although the kids may look OK today they can turn for the worse quickly.

Do they have temperatures? Have you treated them for Coccidia? Ivomec won't kill coccidia, so if it is that you need to treat them with Dimethox or something similar.

Look here for general worming info or google worming in goats.

Look here for info on coccidia or google coccidia in goat kids.

What do you mean when you say the white one looks like it was sick overnight? Throwing up? Pooping?

Ah, Cocci, we did give some Sulmet to the white buck yesterday after he got his shot. And I will treat him with it for the next 4 days, I will run out there and give the other 3 some Sulmet, and round up the other 3 that we couldn't catch yesterday. Cocci was my first thought, but then I thought I'd ask if anyone else had any other ideas.
The lack of energy has me very concerned. He needs to eat and drink, and MOVE. That worried me.
We did have one kid buck in another herd with the runny/watery poop, and 5 days of treatment fixed him up. (We also brang him to the vet, in which was a wasted trip, since all he told me was to worm him, thank God for the internet!)
Thanks so much for all your input. I will keep you all posted.

I would treat ALL of the kids w/ sulmet for 7 days, then repeat in 21 days for the rest of the summer, treating for 5 days ea time.
I'd give the puny ones B shots and 5-10 cc of red cell.
I'd top dress their feed w/ a probiotic or give them all ProBios for a couple days.

We lost kids to a BAD, rampant strain the year we got into boers and the ONLY way we stopped / controlled it, was to hit it fast, hard, and often for that whole summer.

Now, every 21 days, all our kids get sulmet all summer, and their fecals show few occysts.
