We are going to be first time goat owners!! We are not breeding or milking, and have decided 2 Pygmy wethers will be the best fit for our family. We live on the gulf coast of central Florida (Close to St. Petersburg) and are needing easy, dummy proof housing ideas for these 2 gents. I was HOPING to make something myself but it all seems so complicated. We live in the city in an agricultural area, so the yard they will be in is not very big. I plan to section an area off for them and this will be their main living area, but need a shelter! What are the best, easiest, cheapest shelters you use for 2 pygmy goats?? also, what would you use as a flooring/bedding?

If you think you will get pygmies then you could consider using a large dog "igloo" shelter.

We have Nigerian Dwarf goats and my DH built their three sided shelters using plywood sheets with a sloping metal roof. The shelters are about 4' tall and the goats like to get up on the roof and lounge around. Dirt floors are fine as long as they stay dry. You can throw in some hay or straw for them to sleep on as long as you remember to clean it out every so often.

You are going to enjoy your boys! We'd all love to see pictures when you get set up. hint hint

We are across the bay from you!

Large dogloos work great if you have a covered area as well. (For those long rain storms) It gives them a warm place to snuggle out if the wind or on our "winter" nights. If you get two that are bonded or young they will share fine. You can also look for different types of dog houses. Make sure it's in a high spot- or you can put it on a pallet so when it rains it doesn't get muddy inside. We add hay/shavings in January-March- but you probably wouldn't even need to do that. Our goats are usually clipped in the winter since we show from November-March.

You can also build a three sided shelter. Doesn't need to be air tight- just block the wind and rain.

Watch Craigslist and yard sales.
