Hello!
Coming over from BackYardChickens, and I'm hoping to get a pig this year to process this fall. I've presented the idea to my poor husband in the manner of "I want to get a pig to eat." His response was just raised eyebrows. Poor guy
Anyway, I did this to him last year, only it was chickens. Of course, then I just showed up at home with a dozen chicks, a big bin to brood them and a bag of feed. He has since taken to helping care for them, feed them, and he put their run together (old dog kennel with additional hardware cloth/chicken wire.) He seems to like the goofy things (so do I).
I grew up on a farm, and did FFA heavily when I was younger. He grew up in the city and moved to the country. We both hunt and fish a lot, and I do all of our processing, along with processing for friends.
So, I think I'm gonna get us a pig, once I can get fencing and shelter up, and before that happens I need to figure out what I want to do. The ground's a touch frozen now, so I have some time to plan and spend
As for us, we have an almost 3 y/o daughter, an old Lab, and 15 chickens. We're only on an acre, but are surrounded by fallow land, and the "close" neighbor is an older couple that used to do the whole farm animal thing, but now seem to enjoy living vicariously through us (without the feed bills). They even like my roosters crowing end encourage me to free range the chickens in their yard.
So got the chicken part down, and now here to learn about pigs (or remember more of what I forgot from FFA
Thanks!
Jen
