We added two heifers (2 year olds) & a bull (about 1 maybe alittle more)to our herd at the end of January. They didn't have papers which is fine. This brings my total to 3 mature cows (which are bred), a 6 month steer, the bull and two smaller heifers. I only have 9 acres, & about 5- 6 will be fenced for pasture by spring, so I am at capacity or maybe over, I was only planning on adding a bull, but it was a kids package deal. The newer animals seem small, the previous owner de-horned them, based on the horns he showed me the ages are probably correct. The bull from all appearances seems to be pure Highland, shorter wide snout, smaller ears. The heifers look like they may have some dairy cow in them, longer legs, longer narrower shout, ears are positioned higher on their heads, larger & more round, overall look lighter, not as stocky as a typical Highland. I need one animal to send to the butcher in the fall, thinking one of the newer heifers may be the candidate, one in particular seems to segregate herself from the rest, & somthing doesn't seem quite right about her conformation. I bought them right ($1100 for all 3, was looking at droping $ 800 for a bull) so this was always a possibility. I am planning on grass feeding, but if I need to grain her to put on weight I will, but at that point I will have to segregate her. Does this seem like a good plan ?
