The last time I trimmed my doe's hooves she had thick white stuff embedded in her hooves, I had to dig it out. I didn't notice an odor. She also seems to be favoring her back hooves like their hurting her. It has been raining a lot here, so the ground is moist, and it is hot. Could this be something like hoof rot?

Where was the white stuff? Foot rot is usually inbetween the toes, can sometimes be in/on the soles of the hoof, and is very smelly. Foot scald is usually also between the toes, and causes them to be red and inflammed looking. You can get some Hoof N Heel and squirt on the hooves twice a day for a few days just in case, or if you have some zinc sulfate you can do a foot bath twice a day for a few days.

Hi,

My little fainter has sore front feet also, there is white hard stuff in there in the soles of her feet. I trimmed her hoofs, they did need it. when i first dug the crap out of the foot she most favors, it stunk, smelled like strong hoof smell, I guess like strong smell like when filing a horses hoof, and putting the shavings right under you nose ( I know why would you do that, but i did lots of dumb things as a kid). I will see if i can get a picture, what her hoofs are doing is the outside hoof is hooking to the inside. I am wondering if i can trim that off where it is hooking, to try and get it straighted out. I will post a picture. be worth a thousand words.

Thanks! Bill the farmer

 @ the hoof trimming comment! We all did stupid things as kids!

As far as her hooves go, they're a good bit overgrown. Definitely trim the sides so they're flat with the soles, and trim her toes back and trim that hook off. Just from viewing the soles, I don't see anything that looks like foot rot, but I can't see inside the toes, so she may have some in there.

Hi, thanks for the reply! From what i have been reading, i don't think she has foot rot either, there is nothing growing between her toes, it just seems like her feet hurt her. She walks real gingerly and kneels all the time, and spends lots of time laid down. She is still eating and other boldily functions are normal.

I will trim some more back tomorrow maybe. Can I take her heel down, that seems to be what she is most walking on, rather than being flat footed?

Also is there something that Agway or TSC has to treat her feet? I read about copper sulfate and vinegar or something, we can get what ever is the best for her, she is such a darn cutie, i hate to see her hurting and unhappy.

Thanks!

You want to trim the heels and the sides of the hoof so they're flat with the sole. You also want to trim some length off the toe, and trim the sides of the toe so there are no hooks.

Yes, TCS or Agway should have something called Hoof N Heel. You can do zinc (some use copper) sulfate foot baths, but if you don't have many sheep it's best to buy the Hoof N Heel because I believe the zinc sulfate only comes in large bags.

Hope she is prancing and hopping around after her trim! If not.....has she been tested for CAE?
