My 22 year old mare has this weird circle looking thing on her lip. You kind of have to lift her lip up on the right side to see it. It is very small, about the size of a bb pellet, but it concernes me. She had it last year, and i put a generic healing ointment on it, and it went away. She has no symptoms at all. Any Ideas??

I have twice had a vaguely-similar-sounding thing happen. The first time, it was a single circular area about 1/4" diameter on the fleshy mucous-membrane inside of the lip. I had it excised and sent off to the pathology lab. It came back normal, nothing interesting, although unfortunately in the interim the horse died (unrelated) of a ruptured aorta in the paddock making the histopathology bill a little pointless, sigh.

The second time, it was maybe half a dozen similar-looking circular lesions, mostly right near the 'edge' of the lip (where hairy external part meets mucous-membrane internal part), all on one side of the mouth. Vet suggested maybe they were irritation from grazing thistles. Spent afternoon removing ALLLL thistle rosettes from paddock, lesions went away. I don't know if they really were caused by the thistles, since he's been with plenty of thistles since then and they've never recurred, but at any rate they were evidently something harmless.

If the circle is irregular and blobby, or you see it getting worse, it would be worth asking your vets opinion, but to me it's sort of a "next time he's out for some other reason" type thing rather than "call him right now". If the circle is very regular-looking and not worsening, personally I'd just keep an eye on it but of course it is always best to follow your own instincts as to whether to have the vet take a look.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Yes, your sounds similar. It's not inside her lip/mouth but right where the lips meet. It is nit irregular or causing her nay problems, and like I said it goes away when I apply ointment.
