The neighbor just called. Her horse has a gash on the neck that happened over night. She talked to the only horse vet open today and he said it was to late to stitch so, she would have to treat it like an open wound. Penicillin shot and cream to pack it. The cream he recommended can only be gotten through a vet and he won't be around. The vet she usually uses is gone until Monday. Our vet office no longer has a horse vet.

The horse is terrified of shots and that is going to be an issue that will need to be overcome. But, does anyone have an idea what she can use in place of the cream?

she's going to have to get some sort of antiseptic in there. Call local tack shop or grain store, they should have something. Also, spray on granulex or some product for proud flesh.

Yep, you could use neosporin/bacitracin, but it comes in such little tubes it makes little sense to use it on larger animals. Nolvasan, Furazone, Betadine are all better choices, and they come in either spray bottles or with an aplicator. Just easier and more convenient to use, since you have to apply it often. Also, with horses, you need something on the wound so proud flesh doesnt grow.

How is the horse doing, by the way???

I didn't talk to her yesterday but, Saturday things were going good. Her SIL was coming down and helping her. I think I will be offering to help now, the effects of my accident are gone so, I should be able to help.

what the heck did I miss? You had a n accident too???? are you OK?
Car accident. Peanut and I were heading to town. She's fine and I just had some soreness and stiffness from the seatbelt catching and a migrane. But, I wasn't up to wrangling a horse. NOTHING like your accident.

Well, sorry I missed it, and I am glad everyone is OK. Car accidents are no fun either, even when minor.

we sure Furazone we get it at the local tractor supply. It is a black can with yellow lid and lettering. Make sure you use gloves when applying it, it is some pretty nasty stuff but it works great.

edited for spelling
