How bad does the smell get?

Hi all. I hope to start my small rabbitry later this year. I will be raising meat rabbits, starting with a trio. I hope to aggressively compost with worms directly underneath the rabbits cages. How bad should I expect the smell to be? I am wondering about this just to make sure I choose the best spot for them.

Thanks,
Kelly

I haven't really noticed a smell. As long as it doesn't turn into a wet pit it shouldn't smell too bad. I will often throw fresh grass clippings or leaves over it between clean up, not only does it smell good but helps keep the flies away during wet weather.

Thanks. The clippings/leaves sounds like a great idea. I was planning on changing out newspaper laid on top of the bin every so often to reduce the urine content to help the worms thrive.

My summer garden is planted. With gardening on my mind, I'm almost as excited about raising rabbits for the compost as I am for the meat. :)

The compost IS amazing! And I add fresh poo all through out the season unless something is in bloom. Too much nitrogen can cause blossom drop or end rot. Then all through fall and winter I just dump the hay and poo right into the garden, big giant piles. Then come spring it's down to about 1/2 a foot hight and I till it all in. My neighbors think I'm crazy, but they don't complain when lots of fresh awesome fruits and veggies end up on their door. lol
