How hard are sheep to keep?

I am looking to acquire a small flock of sheep to add to my farm, the field I have in mind has woven wire running completely around it. My question is how hard is it to keep them in one fenced in field and do they tend to wander off like goats or are they less of a hassle than the goats?

My opinion is they are less trouble than goats. They stay together as long as you don't seperate the rams from the ewes. The rams will always try to go with the ewes and they can wreak havoc with fences. Get a couple then see what happens. If it doesn't work out you are not really out anything. I wouldn't get to deep into them at first though. They are great to range with goats, because they eat differently.

I am very new to sheep, I have two, a border Cheviot and a Katahdin, both are ewes. I have a back yard that is fenced with "livestock paneling". I got them primarily to mow my grass and maybe later to milk, the Cheviot.

Anyhoo, they are very easy to care for. We are very happy with them, they don't climb or baah too loud or get into things that we don't want them to get into. They are very calm and just fun to watch.

You must have more than one tho. It can be another sheep, goat or maybe even a horse near by...they get lonely.

Good luck!

what if they get into the horse food?
Horses usually do not like to share food ... you could also feed the horse using a bucket that will fit on the gate and make it high enough that the sheep are not in it ...works for goats and they are more of a pest than sheep Statr out small 2-3 and if all goes well add more

We've had three sheep since last November. We move them around to areas fenced with cattle panels, and back into their barnyard every evening. They are really sweet animals! And they love the weeds from our garden. It is very inspiring to hear them cheering me on as I pull weeds, and knowing that those weed seeds will never sprout in our garden after being run through the sheep is an added bonus!

I have a herd of 125 sheep. If you got page wire, you will not have any problems keeping them in. Barbed wire is another story. Once they get their wooly coats, barbed wire is no problem for them. They are off and running.
One thing I like about sheep: I can call mine and they ALL come home on the run. Has my entire flock get out once into the north quarter across the road.. All I did was call them and they came back.
Sheep are not a big fans of horses. It is not wise to them together.
