I have a 6 week old lamb with the runs. Gave her 2cc Pepto Bismal with a teaspoon of plain yoghurt in it for a probiotic today. Is that enough to help? How often do I do this? She's fine, eating, nursing, drinking water and has energy and not looking dehydrated at all. Just not sure how much and how many days to do this? None of the other lambs have it.

It sounds like it could be the beginning of coccidiosis. If the lamb starts acting unthrifty, it's likely it's coccidiosis. In that case, the Pepto won't be effective.

Thank you for the post Sheepgirl...I can always count on you! Right now the pepto seems to have stopped the runs...but if it is coccidiosis, would Agrimycin 200 help? It is all I have on hand right now and everything is closed here right now to get anything else.

One thing that is different with this lamb from the others is that she has gotten a taste for the sheep pellets and is a little piggy with it...diet change?

Ahhhh...so many questions and I am worried. Hubby just checked her and sees no more sign of it and her little butt is dry with no new runs.

I've read that sulfa drugs are the way to go if it is coccidiosis...not sure where I get that...the vet? Sadly the vets in this area have little to do with sheep...just cattle, horses and pigs.

Thanks Kristi! Just checked her again and during the runs she kept her tail up (so lady like to not want to dirty her tail...LOL) and now she has it down and no more runs that we can tell. Tomorrow will be a bit warmer and we'll give her bottom a good warm water cleaning and drying and see if it stays that way.

Guess we should get a supply of sulfa to keep on hand just in case. Have to find out if this is available at feed stores or only from a vet.
