My goats live in my urban backyard. I have a decent sized yard and the goats are in a 25x30 pen. I have another area of lawn that is about the same size that i was thinking of making into a mini pasture for the goats and chickens. How do i do this? must I remove my lawn? This is where my deptic drain field is, will it cause any issues? I only have two goats and their babies for a short period in spring. Thanks for the advice

Virginia is for Pasture Farmers!
Buy the seed, spread, fertilize, water and mow as needed. Just your fancy grass isn't enough.
Ours was nothing but over grown weeds, we just kept mowing it and now it's nice pasture, never had to seed/feed it.

I noticed some seed at tractor supply that is for deer plots. Thinking the goats and deer are basically the same (browsers with 4 chamber stomachs) that mix of seeds would be good for goats. Any thoughts? It said on the bag it would grow until freeze out which probably will not happen where I live because it seldom gets below 20 degrees at night. I also thought of planting the rye grass seed that I used last winter for fodder. How would that work out for winter feed to lessen the amount of hay I need to buy?
